Hormone Therapy
Hormone therapy is a specialised treatment approach used primarily in the
management of hormone-sensitive cancers such as breast, prostate and certain
types of gynaecological cancers.
How Hormone Therapy Works:
Hormone therapy works by either blocking the production of hormones or interfering
with hormone receptors on cancer cells. Hormones like estrogen and testosterone
can fuel the growth of certain cancers. By disrupting this process, hormone therapy
helps to slow down or inhibit cancer growth, reduce the risk of recurrence, and
manage symptoms associated with hormone-sensitive cancers.
Types of Hormone Therapy:
- 1. Anti-Estrogen Therapy: Used for hormone receptor-positive breast cancers, this therapy blocks estrogen receptors on cancer cells or reduces estrogen production in the body.
- 2. Anti-Androgen Therapy: Used in prostate cancer treatment to block the effects of testosterone, which can stimulate prostate cancer growth.
- 3. Luteinizing Hormone-Releasing Hormone (LHRH) Agonists: These drugs lower the levels of testosterone or estrogen in the body, often used in prostate and certain gynaecological cancers.
- 4. Aromatase Inhibitors: These medications reduce the production of estrogen in postmenopausal women, commonly used in breast cancer treatment.
